Common Core Standards Organization and Wishy Washy!
I've had a lot of questions about how I organize my Common Core Standards and Essential Questions. I display them on posters which are hot glued to ribbon. The standards are attached with velcro so that they are easy to change in and out. (Please excuse the bad picture above. The standards shown are from the 1st grade set. Notice that the clipart images match the standard and that the essential question clipart also matches. This helps the little ones who can't read understand the ... continue reading...
How to Catch a Turkey! Procedural Writing
I love doing procedural writing with Kinders. They always have the cutest ideas for How to do things. We made a turkey and wrote about how to catch him. The example above says, First, you get a net. Next, hide in the bushes. Then, you catch him. To make the turkeys use Crayola Markers to color a coffee filter. Then use an eyedropper to drop a few drops of water on it to make the colors run together. Glue the turkey body on top of the coffee filter and then use scrap ... continue reading...
Walruses and Writers Workshop
Common Core Standards Posters and Essential Questions So.... many of you have asked, " How do you get your kids to write like that?" So, here's your answer. First of all, I am totally in love with the Philosophy behind the Workshop Model. I teach my kids to write by doing a quick mini lesson where I model the writing process. Read-Aloud Activities for Tops & Bottoms
No matter the career path students select to follow, they will spend a lot of time reading. Whether this is textbooks or manuals, building comprehension at a young age is essential. Since comprehension includes many aspects, it takes time, practice, and patience. However, students also need to enjoy reading to see the true importance of the words on the page. Thus, teachers work hard to select engaging read-alouds and high-quality lessons to show students how excellent books are. Luckily, the ... continue reading...

So we created Guiding Readers. What are Guiding Readers? Guiding Readers started ... continue reading...

Making Read Alouds Come to Life: Creepy Carrots
Teacher read alouds are just as important as giving students time to read independently. Read alouds take the student's focus away from having to decode the words and gives students a chance to really hone in and focus on the meaning of the story. I love it when I read a story to children, and they love it so much that they beg me to READ IT AGAIN! It's so important to reread books to children and give them time to: Hear you thinking ... continue reading...
