But today we started one of my favorite units so that made going back to school a little easier, Insects Unit. This Insects Unit can be used with an Insect Animals theme or as stand-alone Reading and Writing lessons and activities. Here is how I plan out my Insects ... continue reading...

Just how BIG is a walrus anyway?
How big is a walrus? We read that a walrus can grow to be up to 12 feet long and that his tusks can be 3 feet long. The kids weren't quite as impressed by this info. as I was so I decided that we should make a life size walrus so that they could see just how BIG that actually is. The walrus was so big that we had to hang him in the lunchroom. In the middle of the walrus is all of the information that we learned about walruses. As I was uploading the pictures I realized that on ... continue reading...
Owl book pictures and a cool video!
Due to a request I am posting some pictures from our owl books. Some of the kids chose to color their pictures and some of them chose to leave them black and white. I told the littles that it was up to them. However, {NO Haters, please } I did tell them that since this was a Nonfiction book the owls had to be realistic. NO PURPLE OWLS, thank you very much. ;) They did a BEAUTIFUL job on their illustrations if I do say so myself. One thing I usually do when we are doing this type of ... continue reading...

Butterflies and vocabulary
I received a few comments on TPT this week about my units {the buyer stated that the Vocabulary was inappropriate for Kindergarten kids} and it made me start thinking about how different we all are as teachers. We have different philosophies about HOW and WHAT children should learn. Some of us are given teacher manuals and basal programs to teach from {my district doesn't use a reading program} and many of us are given a framework to use to guide us in our instruction. I believe that ... continue reading...

Walruses and Writers Workshop
Common Core Standards Posters and Essential Questions So.... many of you have asked, " How do you get your kids to write like that?" So, here's your answer. First of all, I am totally in love with the Philosophy behind the Workshop Model. I teach my kids to write by doing a quick mini lesson where I model the writing process. I think out loud as I write in front of them, Then, they have the opportunity to practice what I've just modeled. They turn ... continue reading...
