The Mitten lesson plans for teaching reading comprehension skills. Responding to literature through writing, studying vocabulary, and a STEM activity.
The Mitten Reading Lesson Plans
The Mitten by Jan Brett is a fun winter read aloud. In this story, animals squeeze in a mitten to keep warm from the winter cold.
Our Engaging Readers units are full of resources for a week-long book study. Students engage in developing reading strategies and have wonderful conversations along the way.
We start the week with making predictions, and by day 2 students are ready to retell the story.
The retell cards are easy to print and put into action or you can use the digital retell version.
Follow up the whole-group activity with individual retelling strips.
Add this lacing mitten activity for a cute display!
Making Connections & Inferring
In the story, the boy calls his grandmother Baba. Students make a connection and tell about the special name they call a grandparent.
Later in the week, students infer what Baba is thinking at the end of the story.
The Mitten Sentence Study
Develop grammar with a sentence study that is included with each of our units.
Assessments, too!
If you choose, students can complete an assessment at the end of your week. There are two different assessment options. Here is the true and false option.
