Engaging STEM activities for kindergarten- 2nd Grade students. Students collect clues by completing STEM and math activities to break the spell on Cinderella.
Come to any of our Get Your Teach On conferences and you will see the excitement and energy that comes from completing hands-on learning activities. The Fairy Tale STEM for Kindergarten-2nd Grade activities were first introduced at GYTO in 2017 and it was a hit! That resource is now available in a printable format so you can take it into your own classroom!
You will need some additional materials for the actual challenges themselves but hopefully, you have some things in your classroom. For example, pattern blocks, dominoes, snap cubes, craft sticks, etc. You may need to do a little searching and asking for donations for some other items such as cardboard tubes, craft pom poms, yarn, tape, and some candy!
Fairy Tale STEM Activities for Kindergarten-2nd Grade
One of the things to think about before starting your challenges is how much time your students will need. Will you complete all of the challenges in a single day? Or, will you spread the challenges throughout the week? Either way works! Once you’ve decided, choose 7 of the challenges and start preparing your materials.
I have found that if you number your stations and use rotation cards, you can avoid some chaos! Once students complete a challenge, they receive a letter to the magic word that they will unscramble at the end. The magic word helps them break the spell put on Cinderella by the grumpy wizard, Rumpelstiltskin.
Once you’re all set up, you are ready to begin! Students will have fun using their engineering and math skills to solve the problems.
These kindergarten students are constructing a tower that is the perfect height for Rapunzel to escape using the length of her hair.
For the Billy Goats Gruff challenge, students must build a bridge for the goats to cross over. The troll (Sour Patch Kid) must fit under the bridge.
