As children get older, they often wonder how some of the content they learn in school will apply to their life. So, teachers have to show students how the material relates to various aspects outside of school. However, one part that students never question involves the alphabet. Students begin to learn their letters even before they enter school. Then, they focus heavily on learning letters in preschool and kindergarten. This progresses to sounds and blending everything together to form words. ... continue reading...

This is how I manage my literacy centers. The pirates ship was made using styrofoam sheets and paint. You can buy the sheets at most craft stores. You draw your shape onto the sheet and then cut it out with a hot wand. Super easy! The little pirates are birthday party invitations that I bought at Target. Each child is placed in a group...pirates, anchors, pirates ships, jolly rogers or maps. So you can see that today the pirate ships will complete the activities at the abc center and then ... continue reading...

Making Inferences
Learning how to make inferences is a really tough skill to learn! Often, students want to look back in the text for answers. However, this is not the only aspect students need to do when making their own inferences. They need to use their prior knowledge, personal experience and incorporate it with the information provided. Additionally, in the primary grades, we know that students' listening comprehension far exceeds their reading comprehension since students in kindergarten and first grade are ... continue reading...
Thank You for What You’ve Done
This is my sweet baby brother, J.R. He was born when I was twelve years old and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE him! :) When he was only 13 years old he was injured in an accident. The accident left him a quadriplegic. He can't speak and he has no control over his muscles. He communicates with us by moving his eyes. He looks up for yes and he looks down for no. But mostly he just Smiles and he brings joy to us every minute that we are around him. For many years he has been pretty much stuck at ... continue reading...
Owl book pictures and a cool video!
Due to a request I am posting some pictures from our owl books. Some of the kids chose to color their pictures and some of them chose to leave them black and white. I told the littles that it was up to them. However, {NO Haters, please } I did tell them that since this was a Nonfiction book the owls had to be realistic. NO PURPLE OWLS, thank you very much. ;) They did a BEAUTIFUL job on their illustrations if I do say so myself. One thing I usually do when we are doing this type of ... continue reading...
Phonological Awareness Small Group Activities
Students learn so many critical skills while in school. For instance, they learn how to add and subtract, which are essential when dealing with money. Additionally, they learn how to write, read, and spell, which are necessary for many aspects of life. Therefore, teachers work hard to create exciting ways for students to learn content. In terms of language arts, it takes time to understand that sounds blend together to make words. Luckily, phonological awareness small group activities are an ... continue reading...
