There are so many crucial components to becoming a strong reader and writer. Therefore, it can be overwhelming for teachers to plan high-quality lessons to meet each student where they are. However, teachers know that strong phonological awareness sets the stage for decoding, blending, and reading. Therefore, it is crucial to focus on when teaching the science of reading. Luckily, phonological awareness rhyming creates fun, exciting ways for students to focus on letters, words, and ... continue reading...

Working with Words
I use the Stretchy the Word Snake mat during my Guided Reading Groups. We build words in the boxes and use the little cars (look closely under the letter m and you will see one) to drive slowly as we say each sound. They we drive our cars faster as we blend the word together. The kids love this activity. Note: if you are building a word like ship...the digraph /sh/ goes in one box because it makes one sound. Once we've done this lesson several times I place the materials in our ... continue reading...
Walruses and Writers Workshop
Common Core Standards Posters and Essential Questions So.... many of you have asked, " How do you get your kids to write like that?" So, here's your answer. First of all, I am totally in love with the Philosophy behind the Workshop Model. I teach my kids to write by doing a quick mini lesson where I model the writing process. I think out loud as I write in front of them, Then, they have the opportunity to practice what I've just modeled. They turn ... continue reading...
Stretchy the Word Snake mat: Stretching Sounds in words
One of the kids favorite Guided Reading activities is using the magnetic wand and Stretchy the Word Snake mat to segment and blend the sounds in words. First, we push a chip in each box as we say the sound. Then, we wave the wand over the boxes as we say the word. There is a short video on my Facebook page that shows this in action. You can read more about elkonin boxes HERE You can order magnetic wands on Amazon by clicking on the picture below. To differentiate ... continue reading...

Letter Identification and Concepts of Print Digital Centers
Letters are hard to learn! First, there are 26 different ones to know. On top of that, there are 2 versions of each letter in the form of uppercase and lowercase! Second, those letters all have an individual sound. This means that students have to be able to look at a letter and understand the sound it makes. Third, students must learn how all those sounds blend to create words. Of course, there are always exceptions and rules for students to learn as they progress through school. ... continue reading...
Making Read Alouds Come to Life: Creepy Carrots
Teacher read alouds are just as important as giving students time to read independently. Read alouds take the student's focus away from having to decode the words and gives students a chance to really hone in and focus on the meaning of the story. I love it when I read a story to children, and they love it so much that they beg me to READ IT AGAIN! It's so important to reread books to children and give them time to: Hear you thinking ... continue reading...

Initial Sounds Activities for Phonological Awareness
David Kilpatrick said, “Phonological and Phoneme Awareness is the foundation upon which all the other layers of literacy are built.” Honestly, this quote does an incredible job of explaining the importance of phonological awareness. Since it is the foundational layer for students to read and write, it is essential for students to work on these skills from a young age. Teachers know this importance and work hard to create enjoyable activities. Thankfully, the Initial Sounds Activities for ... continue reading...
Interactive Reading Comprehension Journals
I love looking around my room and seeing smiling faces while students read. This creates such a special feeling in the classroom. However, learning to read is really like learning a new language.
