The 100th day of school is such a big milestone for kindergarteners and is definitely a day worth celebrating! In this post, I’m going to share some 100th day of kindergarten ideas that you can use to make this an extra special day in your classroom.
5 Fun Ideas for the 100th Day of Kindergarten
A quick search for activities to use on the 100th day of kindergarten can leave you with an overwhelming number of ideas. It could take all of your prep time just to sort through them all! That’s why I wanted to narrow it down to some fun ideas that incorporate other content areas. These activities will help you add some fun 100th day festivities throughout your daily routine!
1. 100th Day Writing
You could begin your day by asking students some fun questions that involve the number 100. These questions are perfect for a morning meeting:
- What would you do with $100?
- Do you think you could eat 100 of something? What food would it be?
- Did you know you’re 100 days smarter? What is something you didn’t know 100 days ago?
After giving your students a chance to discuss the answers to these questions, you can transition into a fun writing activity. For this activity, students will write a sentence based on a sentence starter for one of the questions above. By discussing the question first, students will be eager to share their thoughts on paper if they didn’t get a chance to share with the group.
You can compile all of the completed writing into a class book. This is such a fun way for students to publish their work. It really helps them feel like writers! You could also set aside their writing and display it with a 100th day craft (which I’ll share later in this post).
2. 100th Day Math Stations
One of the reasons why it’s so fun to celebrate the 100th day of kindergarten is that our young learners have been working hard to count to 100! Incorporating the 100th day of school into your math center time can be a fun way to celebrate 100 days of school.
For example, students can rotate through stations where they see what they can build with 100 pattern blocks, unifix cubes, or even cups! This can be such a great way for students to better understand the quantity of 100, especially when they can use objects of different sizes.
3. Race to $1.00
This fun game is always a favorite on the 100th day of kindergarten! It can be used during math centers, small group instruction, or even during a class party for the 100th day of school. No matter when you decide to use it, students will love it and will want to play it over and over again!
Students don’t necessarily need to know the coin values in order to play the game, but it does stretch their coin identification muscles! The piggy bank game mat has a combination of nickels and dimes that total $1.00 and students will try to cover each of the coins to make $1.00. They will use a spinner to see which coin they need to cover. If they’re really lucky, they’ll land on the space with two coins!
Even though students might not know how much the coins are worth, this game helps students see the differences between a dime and nickel.
4. The Wolf’s Chicken Stew
You can also incorporate your 100th day celebration into your read aloud! “The Wolf’s Chicken Stew” by Keiko Kasza is a fun book to read on the 100th day of kindergarten. The wolf is craving chicken stew, so he secretly delivers treats in quantities of 100 to the chicken’s house.
Unbeknownst to the wolf, the chicken doesn’t eat the treats herself. Instead, she shares them with her 100 chicks! This clever read aloud is always such an engaging story to read with students on the 100th day of school.
After reading and discussing the story together as a class, students can gather some of the missing chicks from the story! You can scatter the numbered chicks around the room and have students color in a 100 chart when they find a missing chick. They will be excited to discover a surprise on their paper once they’ve found all of the chicks!
If number identification is challenging for your kindergarten students, this could be a partner or whole-class activity!
5. “Me at 100” Art Project
Finally, students can complete an art project to go along with your 100th day celebration. For this project, students can create a portrait of what they will look like at 100 years old. What color will their hair be? Will they need to wear glasses? What color of clothing will they like to wear?
Students will love discussing their design choices as they assemble their projects. This is also a great opportunity for them to practice important fine motor skills! The completed portraits look adorable on a bulletin board display and it’s such a fun way to wrap up a 100th day celebration.
