Themed learning activities can be such a helpful way to increase engagement and motivation in the kindergarten classroom. This is especially true when the themed activities are related to animals! In this post, I’m going to share ocean animal activities for kindergarten that your students will love.

The Benefits of Themed Units in Kindergarten
Themed units can be such a helpful addition to the kindergarten curriculum! There are several reasons why kindergarten teachers often turn to themed learning when they’re putting together their lesson plans:
- Engaging Repetition: Themed units allow teachers to apply curriculum standards to engaging activities. This gives students the repetition they need with academic skills while keeping things fresh with themed activities.
- Relevant Vocabulary: Young students are learning new vocabulary each and every day! A themed unit gives students the chance to practice relevant vocabulary that relates to a cohesive theme. A unit provides multiple exposures to new vocabulary words so they are more likely to stick!
- Student Interest and Motivation: Themed units can grab students’ attention with topics that are interesting to them. This can come in handy during seasons of the school year when students might be more distractible, like when spring fever hits the classroom! They will be eager to dive into the engaging activities of a themed unit!
5 Ocean Animal Activities
The ocean is such a fun topic for kindergarteners to discuss, especially during the spring months when many students are eagerly anticipating summer beach trips. You can use these ocean animal activities to put together an entire unit of ocean-themed learning for your kindergarteners. Here are some of my favorite components of an ocean animal unit:
1. Nonfiction Read Alouds
One of the best ways to introduce a unit topic is through engaging nonfiction read alouds. Before reading about a particular ocean animal, students can document their background knowledge on a schema anchor chart.

Then, as you read the nonfiction text together as a class, you can also include new learning and misconceptions on this chart. This anchor chart will be a helpful resource that students can reference throughout the unit.

There are many different nonfiction read alouds that you can use for an ocean animals unit. I have written several ocean animal readers that include animal photographs and kid-friendly descriptions. These are a great addition to an ocean unit for kindergarten!
2. Ocean Animal Fact Finders
To help students improve their comprehension skills, you can have them use the nonfiction text to answer a question about the ocean animal. For example, before reading a nonfiction book about seahorses, you could have students consider the question: “What makes seahorses unique?”

Students can document their thoughts about that question before reading. Then, they can write what they found out from the reading. This is a great comprehension exercise for young learners!
3. Research Writing
A nonfiction unit like this ocean animal unit can serve as inspiration to practice research writing! Students are learning all sorts of new facts about animals that live in the ocean, so it’s a good time for them to practice sharing what they’ve learned in writing.

These research writing worksheets are an engaging way for students to practice informational writing. They can write their three favorite facts that they learned about an animal during their research. They can also use the word bank to label a picture of the ocean animal. Your students will love to share their completed research with their peers!
4. Fact or Fiction Activity
Now that students have become more familiar with ocean animals, they will be ready to put their knowledge to the test with a fun activity! Give students a sheet of statements about an ocean animal you’ve discussed together during the unit. Some of these statements will be true and some will be false.

Students will use their knowledge of that particular ocean animal to color the factual statements in one color and the fictional statements in a different color. This is an engaging way to review what they’ve learned during the ocean unit!
5. Crafts
Crafts are a must-have for an ocean animal unit! Craft projects give students a chance to practice following multi-step directions as they also improve their hand strength and coordination. Any additional fine motor practice you can add to the daily learning routine is always a plus!

These ocean animal crafts look great on a bulletin board or classroom display! You could also use the crafts as a companion activity to the students’ research writing. Students can display their ocean animal craft next to their research. This can be so motivating for students; when they know their work is going to be put on display, they will want to do their best work!
I hope that this post has given you some activity ideas for your ocean unit! No matter what activities you choose, I’m sure your students will love to learn more about animals that live in ocean habitats.
