Kindergarten is such an exciting grade to teach because we’re able to help students build a solid foundation of phonics skills. As we all know, this takes a lot of time and practice which can be challenging for young learners. It’s helpful to keep some engaging activities on hand for kindergarten phonics practice that will keep students motivated for this important review. In this post, I’m going to share one of my favorite low-prep activities for phonics practice in kindergarten: Color by code.

Kindergarten Phonics Practice
As young children are developing their decoding and word identification skills, it’s essential that they get as much repetition and practice as possible. This will help them build a strong foundation for reading!

As we can see in Hollis Scarborough’s Reading Rope infographic, decoding and sight recognition are two essential components that lead to skilled reading. It’s imperative that students get all of the practice they need to develop these skills. One way to keep students motivated to practice phonics skills is to use engaging activities like color by code.
5 Ways to Use Kindergarten Color by Code Worksheets
Color by code worksheets are a fun option to add more kindergarten phonics practice to your daily routine. For these activities, students will first create the key for the coloring by identifying each picture. Once they have done that, they will write the word that matches the picture.

Each picture corresponds to a color that students will use to color the page. They will look for each of the words they’ve written on the picture, filling in each space with the specified color once they find the word. Once they’ve found and colored in the spaces for each word, students are excited to see the final picture in full color!
As you can probably guess, there are many different ways that you can incorporate this activity into your daily routine. I wanted to share five of my favorite options with you:
1. Morning Work
You can start your day with research-based phonics review during your morning work routine! One of the most important parts of morning work in kindergarten is that students are able to complete the task with minimal assistance. By starting the day with a quick win, your class can ease into a productive day of learning.
Color by code worksheets can be a great tool for morning work because the format and instructions are the same every time. Students will know exactly what to do when they see a new picture to color on their desks. They will be able to get right to work while they wait for the daily routine to begin.

2. Literacy Centers
Since students are motivated to complete color by code worksheets independently, they are also a great choice for literacy centers! It can be tricky to keep students engaged in their learning stations while you work with small groups during centers time. It’s so helpful to have activities that are not only easy for students to complete independently but also highly engaging. Students love to watch the pictures come to life as they add color to the worksheets!
Color by code worksheets can also make it easy to target specific phonics skills that your students need to review. This can make centers time even more worthwhile for your students, since they are working on skills specific to them.
3. Early Finishers
Kindergarten students love to color, so many of them wouldn’t hesitate to grab a color by code worksheet when they finish a task early. You can print off a variety of options that fit within your targeted phonics review and give students the chance to choose a picture to color while they wait for the next classroom activity to begin.
You could even create early finisher color by code packets for your students. They can keep them in their desks or cubbies so they are ready to grab whenever they have a few extra minutes. This is also helpful when you have an unexpected pocket of time and want your students to do something worthwhile with the extra few minutes.

4. Sub Plans
Color by code activities can also be a great addition to your sub plans! Students will know just what to do and it will be easy for the substitute teacher to keep the students engaged in phonics practice.
Plus, it’s nice for the sub to have a few extra activities on hand in case lessons go more quickly than planned or if other planned activities fall through. Color by code activities are always a great choice, since they’re easy to prep and fun for students to complete.
5. Homework
Choosing developmentally appropriate homework can be a challenge in kindergarten! Color by code activities can be a good activity option for homework. These activities will give students additional practice with a specific phonics skill as they find and color each focus word on the page. Your students’ families will also appreciate the straightforward activity option!
