Informational Text Features in Books: Lions
We decided to dig deeper into informational texts and this book made it a perfect place to start!
National Geographic has some fantastic non-fiction books: Here are the books (affiliate link) that will be part of these series of lessons:
- Lions by Laura Marsh
- Elephants by Avery Elizabeth Hurt
- Giraffes by Laura Marsh
- Meerkats by Laura Marsh
As you can see, each book includes very specific lessons. Through repeated reading, students are able to dig deeper into the book.
Informational Text Charts
We use charts to help monitor our understanding of the new information we learn…
and they are a helpful resource when we write about our new knowledge.
This chart provides a support for students as they take their turn at writing informational texts.
Informational Text Features Support
The National Geographic Kids series are a perfect fit when studying kindergarten informational texts. The students are able to easily match up the features from our posters with text features they find in the books.
Opinion Writing
We also wondered if lions would make a good pet.
I remember asking my class a similar question. I had one student say, “No, they would not be a good pet because they eat meat… and WE ARE MEAT!” Ha!
Lion Craft
And what better way to wrap up a unit on informational text features, then to add a cute little craft!
If you enjoyed our other reading comprehension units, we think you will love these as well. This bundle, that looks deeply into informational texts, will work wonderfully for kindergarten and first grade!
